Over time, I've come to regard the River Derwent, from my view of it in Taroona, Tasmania, as a symbol of stability, continuity and hope. My symphony endeavours to represent, in one movement, something of those sentiments. The opening, a direct quote from the 5th and final movement of my River Views, for trombone and string orchestra (1995), becomes an integral component of reference.
The digressions, mood changes, moments of climax, ruminations, fantasy and, towards the conclusion, pagan-like celebratory dance to the freedoms nature seems to represent, inevitably return to the ever present permanence of the river, impassive in its tranquility.
