Composed in 1995 for Trumpet and Piano, this work was later arranged in 2004 for Simon Cawthorn and the Hobart City Brass Band - dedicated to Simon Cawthorn's very fine flugelhorn playing. The work was further revised in 2007 for Justin Breen's 'Smart Brass' ensemble, with the solo part performed, on this occasion, by David Eaves. In 2016 I reworked this piece as an instrumental song for piano, four hands, entitled Love bade me welcome, inspired by the poem of George Herbert and the choral setting of that poem by John Tavener (although there are few similarities). Finally then, I have returned to this work in 2023 as the conductor of Glenorchy City Brass, composing it with the beautiful Flugelhorn of Carmen Turk in mind as soloist.
