Hymnus ante Somnus was composed in 2002 for mixed chorus, this arrangement, for brass, was done originally in 2008 for a brass quartet comprising Justin Breen, Cathryn Williams, Phil Riley and myself. In 2025, I decided add an optional tuba part, to make the piece more appealing to a wider variety of ensembles and settings. As such, this work may be performed by either quartet or quintet, using standard or Brass Band instrumentation. It may also be performed by larger ensembles, doubling parts and reducing players at the points in the music marked as 'solo'.
