Work started on ”lutruwita“ at the end of December 2019 and was finished some months later. The opening phrase played on violoncello, a cipher of the word ”lutruwita“, makes timbral and poetic reference to a slow movement from Don Kay’s first symphony: ”Love Voice of Moinee“. The piece is conceived picturesquely. I was thinking of the Derwent Rivulet, particularly in the area around Green Point, the sun reflected on hills either side, colourful clouds and birds flying in formation. The piece explores all these impressions expressionistically, there is though no explicit narrative intended. Technically the work reflects the influence of Pierre Boulez and György Ligeti in terms of organisation of canons, which are intended in this context to be expressive of refracted sunlight.
In addition to the cipher, a series of melodies (approx. 16) were conceived pertinent to the aesthetic and combined into the harmonic fabric of the work. Aesthetically the piece is as futuristic as it is ancient and may wait sometime for its premiere. It may be played separately or in the context of subsequent pieces making up a quartet of lutruwita works for large chamber ensemble:
I - lutruwita (nipaluna 2)
II - larapuna
III - tiagarra
IV - payriminpatatik
