Swell takes listeners to the mouth of the Derwent Estuary, a coast lined with cliffs and flat mudstone platforms that are submerged with each tide. The piece draws upon the rhythms and intensities of the waves themselves, ranging from defined little ridges that irregularly plip against the rock to broad heaving swells that consistently pound the coast. Meanwhile, shifting harmonies suggest the sensory conflict between cold water and hot rocks; a quintessential summer experience.
Swell provides ample opportunity to showcase the rich timbre of two bass clarinets. Performers can enjoy rehearsing the closely intertwined dovetailing lines and wide-ranging dynamics. The work would be suitable for adding instrumental variety to a programme of clarinet duets, or as textural contrast to larger works for massed bass clarinet ensemble.
