Bright Spark was generously commissioned by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra for schools concerts in September 2025. Composed for a colourful chamber orchestra of 14 instruments, the piece comes with a ‘body percussion’ part for young audience members to perform with the orchestra. Teachers will find the body percussion part simple but engaging, and that the
orchestra provides a clear pulse and structure for students to follow.
Bright Spark is also suitable for general programming. Lasting just under three minutes and adopting a rollicking pace throughout, it is an ideal concert opener, closer, or encore. The music begins with robust violin above a bouncy accompaniment, before the brass take the tune in a contrasting lyrical section. These two moods interact and interplay, continuing to build toward a glittery recapitulation.
