This piece is intended to convey the enduring resilience of Nature, against the human impulse to ruin what we have been given to enrich our lives - even in this case, in a National Park. Lake Pedder was a glacial outwash Lake, high in the South West wilderness of Tasmania, with a rare broad sweep of pink quartz beach. It was flooded 50 years ago to provide an impoundment for water for producing hydroelectricity - a good thing but in the wrong place? My mind sees the original lake 'unbroken' and recent underwater filming has shown the sand dunes remain intact and only a light film of debris in the beach. This Lake is so central to the stories from thousands of years ago through to early white exploration and very early conservation efforts that led to major shifts in societal values for the environment and demands political action, for example over the nearby Franklin River.
