This work is drawn from my Second Symphony of 2000. The original work ran for approximately 10 minutes and was scored for orchestra in three movements. In 2013 I revised the Symphony, making use of two works that had been written since the original version of the Symphony and that were based on the music contained within. In making this new version of the first movement, I have used both the revised Symphony as well as the transcribed and adapted version of the first movement (also titled Adagio) for wind band, completed in 2001. I have drawn inspiration from the disparate colours of the two versions, before combining those colours in a wholly new conception of the very dramatic climax.

My Symphony 2 was an important work in the development of my style, and I hope that through doing this new version of the first movement I have given this music that is so important to me a context worthy of performance. This work is dedicated to my wife, Claire.
