My first string quartet started life as "Music To Be Ignored" - a riff on the background court music of the Classical era but with a more modern "gig" sensibility. The first movement rides a jovial groove with a few twists and turns, while the second movement turns a little sour, with a beautiful, mournful and slightly wonky melody. The last movement is more dramatic, flitting between driving 3/4 and a pastoral 6/8 (with a few uneven bars in the mix) before a long build to a rousing climax in four.
