King Solomons Cave was composed from December through to February of 2007/08. I composed this work after visiting the Mole Creek Caves in Northern Tasmania. In King Solomons Cave I hope to represent something of the mystery and grandeur of this amazing part of the world.
In 2023 I reworked this piece for the combined first year learner band of the Combined Primary Schools Band Program. I did this to mark Claire Reade's first year as Combined Schools Music Program Leader (South), and she conducted the premiere performance in November, 2023. In 2023 the first year learners band numbered 360 students from 21 different schools in southern Tasmania, one of which was my eldest son, Owen, who played the Timpani part. I dedicate this piece to all those enthusiastic students, of which I taught nearly 100!
After the first performance I reworked a number of minor elements in the hope that, in the future, more first year players may find enjoyment discovering this beautiful Tasmanian cave.
