As a pianist, I studied many of the Chopin Études and came to admire their expressivity and musical poetry despite being, essentially, exercises. The economy of motif in Chopin’s Études are so perfectly married to their dualpurpose in focusing on pianistic technical development and this inspired me to attempt to emulate these qualities with a contemporary refocus. The following 8 Études cover an inexhaustive range of technical issues a contemporary or new music specialist pianist might face in their repertoire.
