Based on my set of lullabies, but more explicitly, on the accompaniment devised by Simon Barber in 2021 to my Lullaby for Elliott (2018), as well as Bon Anniversaire, a work composed for my father, James Reade (2022). I have composed this work for my loved ones, with the many layers present in the piece reflecting this dedication. I wish them all peace and happiness in their life journey.
Berceuse was begun at the beginning of 2020 as an adaption of my Lullaby for Callum (2015), itself an adaption of my Lullaby for Owen (2012). The following months of the pandemic made composing such a work challenging and demanded more from me - so much so that after 8 months of work I set the piece aside. Taking it back up in early 2023 I found that it now had the space to flourish - much as I have found for myself after these difficult years.
The work is dedicated to Vanessa Sharman, who has waited so patiently for this short lullaby for piano solo.
