Une Évolution is a five movement suite for solo piano. The movements depict the evolution that one may undergo when trying to work out a problem. The first movement mulls over the issue, looking at it from different angles with a feeling of increasing unease. The second movement, ‘Pacing the room…’ heightens the level of frustration as the solution remains elusive. By the middle of the journey, our problem solver is enraged as the way forward remains unclear. The fourth movement revisits material from the first three as the process of coming to a conclusion begins. The mood is resignation rather than triumph or even satisfaction, as it is likely that the problem has not in fact been solved. By the fifth movement, our problem solver has decided to put the issue aside in favour of accepting things as they are and attaining some peace of mind.
