The original Sonata in Two Parts was composed during my student years at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music. The antecedent for the solo flute of Robert Murray in 1998 and the consequent for the clarinet of my good friend, Derek Grice, in 1999. The original was designed to be a pair of pieces, linked by thematic ideas, but essentially two independent works. In the revised version of 2016, I retained the possibility of seperate performance, however with the possibility to play them as a complete work, with the end of the antecedent overlapping the start of the consequent.
In 2025 Dominic Flynn asked me for a new work, or (if I didn't have time) he suggested a performance of my Sonata in Two Parts, but with the clarinet part transcribed for the alto saxophone of Thomas McKay. This was my starting point - I rewrote the clarinet movement for alto saxophone, changing the music as I went. I decided then that the second part would be for my own instrument, the trumpet. After much trouble making the piece come together, I finally completed my contradiction on September 6, 2025 (ready for the premiere
on September 7!). As in the original piece, both solos are performable separately, however, unlike the first piece, the crossover is not an afterthought. Rather, it is the point.
I dedicate this work to the wonderful saxophone playing of Thomas McKay
