Vincent Downes-Smolenski

My style is reminiscent of 20th Century classical, but draws from many styles, both classical and contemporary. My classical influences include Berio, Poulenc, and Bartok. My more contemporary influences include Swans, Xiu Xiu, and Patricia Taxxon. I incorporate a particular sense of humour in my work, with it often being described as subversive, rarely doing what the audience expects. I often try to disarm the audience slightly, generally with bizarre and silly titles. This isn't to undermine the seriousness of the work, but to make it more easily approachable particularly if the music is difficult and break down any preconceived barriers.

I prefer writing solo and small ensemble works, particularly solo piano or for various woodwinds.
