Music, ultimately, can only convey its own meaning, but it can be helpful for a potential audience to have an understanding of the motivation driving its creation. This applies particularly to works which otherwise appear to be purely abstract. In this instance, the work arose from thoughts regarding the challenges of modern democracies to withstand the threat of powerful autocracies. This situation is exacerbated by the dearth of strong democratic leadership in our increasingly complex society. I've endeavoured to comment through music expression using a three-part format with much cross referencing and transformation, not uncharacteristic of my approach to form.
The three sections comprise: Pronouncement; Debate; Outcome.
Instrumentation: Flute, clarinet, tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, 2 percussion (Woodblocks, Bass Drum, Suspended Cymbal, Vibraphone, Tamobourine, Timpani, Triangle)
