My idea was to pit opposing ideas, largely represented by the piano, as protagonist on the one hand, against the remaining ensemble instruments on the other. Following spirited clashes of ideas in the opening movement, moments of frustration and anguish culminate in the second, before giving way to a mood of convivial compatibility sustained throughout the finale.
Instrumentation: Piccolo, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Alto Saxophone, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Timpani, 2 Percussionists, Solo Piano, Viola, Cello, Double Bass.
