This work was formerly called Concert Music for Viola and String Orchestra, but at the insistence of the dedicatee Peter Komlos, Don has changed it to Concerto.
Written in three movements:
I Vivace
II Cavatina
III Allegro con Brio
This work was composed when Peter was a violist in the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.
Peter played some of Don’s Viola music including his Canzonas for flute and viola in May 1974 with David Cubbin on flute at Hobart Town Hall (May 1975) these were subsequently recorded by the ABC
Whilst in the orchestra Peter had several works dedicated to him including Larry Sitsky’s “Improvisation and Cadenza” (1964) ; Peter Sculthorpe’s “Sonata for Viola and Percussion” (1960) ; James Penberthy’s “Viola Concerto” and Ian Harris’s “Fantasy Sonata for Viola and Piano” (1964).
