This work is dedicated to clarinettist, Derik Grice, who has contributed so much to Hobart music making as concert master of the Hobart Wind Symphony for over 20 years, as well as in many other performing situations. The three movements, fast, slow, fast are interconnected by virtue of cross referencing material between, for example, movement 1 and movement 3, and movement 2 and movement 3. The opening two bar unaccompanied clarinet phrase of the second movement is a direct quote from the central slow movement of my 1962 SEXTET for assorted instruments which was premiered in NOV 2020, 58 years after its composition. That particular phrase, simple as it is, haunted me to the extent I felt I must do more with it, even though the context is somewhat changed.
Instrumentation: Clarinet in B♭ & Piano
