Mathinna in the Red Dress (2007)
For String Orchestra
$90.00 inc. GST

Composed at the invitation of Myer Fredman, to whom the work is dedicated, and premiered at a concert given by the Hobart Chamber Orchestra during the “Ten Days On The Island Festival” in 2007.

Mathinna in the red dress is the result of Kay’s musical response to the striking portrait of the young Aboriginal girl, Mathinna (1835-1856), painted in 1842 by Thomas Bock (1790-1855). The work uses material from the String Quartet No.5: a Tragic Life (2002). It has subsequently been performed at The Conservatorium of Music (Sandy Bay Rd Campus) at the Don Kay 80th Birthday Concert (4th October 2013) by the Jan Sedivka Camerata conducted by Jeremy Williams.
